Nashville, Tenn. April 12, 2007 - The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) is pleased to announce the conclusion of its 17th Annual Student Case Report Contest. Each year ABVP opens this contest to students in all areas of veterinary medicine and surgery, who as first time authors produce manuscripts which meet one of the criteria required for board certification. Each winning student case report includes complete and appropriate diagnostic workups as well as medical and/or surgical managements; is clearly reflective of their veterinary expertise; demonstrates their ability to apply medical principles in diagnosis and treatment; and, displays their ability to communicate medical observations and data in an organized manner. Because submissions are reviewed using the same guidelines as those used to evaluate actual ABVP applicants, these winners are to be commended for their excellence. This year's First Place winner, and recipient of $500, is Julie Hunt from Michigan State College of Veterinary Medicine. Her case report was entitled "Medical Management of Dorsal Spinous Process Impingement in a Thoroughbred Racehorse". Our Second Place winner is Rivka Shoulson whose topic was "A Case of Canine Diskospondylitis". Shoulson, who was awarded $250 by ABVP, studies at Mississippi State's College of Veterinary Medicine. Jennifer Lane, also of the Michigan State College of Veterinary Medicine, received Honorable Mention, and an award of $150. Jennifer's manuscript addressed "Red Maple Leaf Toxicosis and Subsequent Anuric Renal Failure in an Arabian Gelding". ABVP sincerely appreciates the efforts of those who entered this year's contest, and strongly encourages all veterinary students across the country to participate in the 2008 Student Case Report Contest. Details will be available at www.abvp.com. Our thanks and congratulations go to this year's outstanding winners.
